Mixed 12th grade review
Ten questions from across the year, a quick way to see what is secure and what needs another look.
Ecosystems and food chains
Calculate energy transfer efficiency between trophic levels
CCSS NGSS.HS-LS2-4CCSS NGSS.SEP 5England: GCSE Biology: Ecology (trophic levels and biomass)
Example
Producers in a field store 50000 kJ/m² of energy per year. Primary consumers gain 2500 kJ/m². What is the efficiency of energy transfer, in %?
- 2500 ÷ 50000 × 100 = 5
- So the answer is: 5 %
Answer: 5 %
Builds on: Energy transfer and pyramids
States of matter
Gas laws: pressure, volume and temperature
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS3-2CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-3England: GCSE Physics: Particle model of matter (pressure in gases)England: A level Physics: Ideal gases (extension)
Example
A gas at 200 kPa occupies 24 cm³. At constant temperature it is compressed to 12 cm³. What is its new pressure, in kPa?
- p₂ = 200 × 24 ÷ 12 = 400
- So the answer is: 400 kPa
Answer: 400 kPa
Builds on: The particle model
Light, sound and waves
Refraction: refractive index, Snell's law and critical angle
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS4-1CCSS NGSS.HS-PS4-3England: GCSE Physics: Waves (refraction)England: A level Physics: Refraction (extension)
Example
A ray of light enters a material from air with an angle of incidence of 60°. The angle of refraction is 33°. What is the refractive index of the material? (n = sin i ÷ sin r; give 2 decimal places)
- sin 60° = 0.866, sin 33° = 0.5446
- 0.866 ÷ 0.5446 = 1.59
- So the answer is: 1.59
Answer: 1.59
Weather and climate
Climate feedbacks and natural climate cycles
CCSS NGSS.HS-ESS2-2CCSS NGSS.HS-ESS2-4England: A level Geography: The carbon and water cycles (extension)England: GCSE Combined Science: Chemistry of the atmosphere
Example
Is this a positive or negative climate feedback: more CO₂ boosts plant growth, which takes up some CO₂?
- A negative feedback works against the initial change.
- So the answer is: negative feedback (reduces warming)
Answer: negative feedback (reduces warming)
