Mixed review
Ten questions drawn from every skill below.
Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-1CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-3England: KS4 Combined Science: Structure, bonding and the properties of matter
Example
What type of bonding is in potassium bromide (KBr)?
- Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals when electrons are transferred.
- So the answer is: ionic
Answer: ionic
Builds on: Electron shells and the periodic table
Relative formula mass
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-7England: KS4 Combined Science: Chemical changes (quantitative chemistry)
Example
Calculate the relative formula mass (Mr) of CO₂. Relative atomic masses: C = 12, O = 16.
- 1 × 12 + 2 × 16 = 44
- So the answer is: 44
Answer: 44
Relative atomic mass from isotope abundances
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-1CCSS NGSS.SEP 5England: GCSE Combined Science: Atomic structure (relative atomic mass)
Example
Natural boron contains 20 % of mass 10 and 80 % of mass 11. Calculate its relative atomic mass to 1 decimal place.
- 10 × 20 + 11 × 80 = 1080
- 1080 ÷ 100 = 10.8
- So the answer is: 10.8
Answer: 10.8
Builds on: Atomic number, mass number and isotopes
Alpha, beta and gamma radiation
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-8England: GCSE Combined Science: Atomic structure (radioactivity)
Example
Which type of radiation: a fast-moving electron from the nucleus?
- Beta particles are fast electrons from the nucleus: stopped by a few mm of aluminium.
- So the answer is: beta (β)
Answer: beta (β)
Half-life calculations
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-8CCSS NGSS.SEP 5England: GCSE Combined Science: Atomic structure (radioactivity) (half-lives)
Example
A sample has an activity of 1600 Bq. Its half-life is 6 days. What is its activity after 24 days, in Bq?
- 24 ÷ 6 = 4
- 1600 ÷ 2^4 = 100
- So the answer is: 100 Bq
Answer: 100 Bq
Builds on: Alpha, beta and gamma radiation
