Mixed review
Ten questions drawn from every skill below.
The rock cycle
CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS2-1England: KS3 Chemistry: Earth and atmosphere (the rock cycle)
Example
In the path from igneous to sedimentary rock, what comes straight after "weathering breaks it into pieces"?
- igneous rock at the surface → weathering breaks it into pieces → erosion carries the sediment to the sea → layers of sediment build up → compaction and cementation form sedimentary rock
- So the answer is: erosion carries the sediment to the sea
Answer: erosion carries the sediment to the sea
Builds on: Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
Leads to: The Earth's atmosphere
Plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes
CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS2-3CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS3-2CCSS NGSS.HS-ESS2-1England: KS3 Chemistry: Earth and atmosphere
Example
Who first proposed that the continents drift?
- Wegener's continental drift (1912) was later explained by plate tectonics.
- So the answer is: Alfred Wegener
Answer: Alfred Wegener
Types of plate boundary and the landforms they make
CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS2-2CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS2-3England: KS3 Chemistry: Earth and atmosphereEngland: KS3 Geography: Plate tectonics
Example
Which type of plate boundary is this: the Andes and their volcanoes?
- At convergent boundaries plates collide: one may sink (subduct), or mountains form.
- So the answer is: convergent (moving together)
Answer: convergent (moving together)
Builds on: Plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes
Measure earthquakes and reduce their risks
CCSS NGSS.MS-ESS3-2CCSS NGSS.SEP 5England: KS3 Chemistry: Earth and atmosphereEngland: KS3 Geography: Natural hazards
Example
On the magnitude scale, each whole number up means the ground shaking (wave amplitude) is 10 times larger. How many times larger is the shaking in a magnitude 8 earthquake than in a magnitude 6?
- 8 − 6 = 2
- 10^2 = 100
- So the answer is: 100
Answer: 100
Builds on: Plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes
