How to use the addition and subtraction worksheet generator
- Choose addition, subtraction or both, and how many digits each number has (1 to 4).
- Choose no regrouping, with regrouping or a mix, the layout (columns or across) and the number of problems.
- Check the preview, press "New set" for different numbers, then "Make the worksheet" and print it with the answer key.
Tips for teachers and parents
- Start each new size without regrouping, so children learn to line up the columns, then move to regrouping once that feels easy.
- Use columns for 2 or more digits: lining up ones under ones and tens under tens prevents most mistakes.
- The most common subtraction slip is taking the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 − 17 = 45). Ask "can I take 7 ones from 2 ones?" before every column.
- Ask children to estimate first (52 − 17 is about 50 − 20 = 30) and check the answer against the estimate.
- A mixed sheet makes children read each sign. Circle the plus and minus signs together before starting.
What “regrouping” means here
In addition, regrouping (carrying) happens when a column adds up to 10 or more, like 27 + 35. In subtraction, regrouping (borrowing) happens when a digit on top is smaller than the one below it, like 52 − 17. "No regrouping" problems never need it in any column; "with regrouping" problems need it in at least one. Subtraction answers are never negative. One-digit subtraction with regrouping uses teen numbers, like 14 − 6.
Questions people ask
- Is the addition and subtraction worksheet generator free?
- Yes. Making and printing worksheets, with answer keys, is free with no sign-up.
- What grade is each setting for?
- Roughly: 1-digit facts in kindergarten and 1st grade, 2-digit without and then with regrouping in 1st and 2nd grade, 3-digit in 2nd and 3rd grade, and 4-digit in 4th grade.
- Can I print the same worksheet again?
- Yes. The print page's address holds the settings and a seed, so it prints the same problems every time. "New set" makes a different one.
