Vocabulary test generator

Type this week's words with their meanings, or pick a ready-made list for your grade, and get a vocabulary test in seconds: match each word to its meaning, multiple choice, or fill in the blank. Practice on screen with the words read aloud, or print it with an answer key.

The sentence after | is optional. With it, the word is blanked out for a fill-in-the-blank test.

Type at least three words with their meanings, or pick a ready-made list.

How to use the vocabulary test generator

  1. Type one word per line with its meaning after a dash (brave - not afraid), and an example sentence after a | if you want a fill-in-the-blank test. Or choose a ready-made list.
  2. Practice on screen: each question shows a word (press 🔊 to hear it) or a sentence with a gap, with four choices that are marked straight away.
  3. Or print a test: match the meaning, multiple choice, fill in the blank, or all three, each with an answer key on its own page.

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Teach the words before testing them: say each word, give the meaning in kid-friendly language, and use it in a sentence about the children's own lives.
  • Keep weekly lists short (8 to 12 words) and come back to old words in later weeks. A word needs many meetings before it sticks.
  • Write meanings your students would say, not dictionary definitions. "Very, very tired" works better than "in a state of extreme fatigue".
  • For fill in the blank, write sentences with a strong clue ("After the long hike, we were ___.") so the test checks meaning, not guessing.
  • Ask students to use each word they got wrong in a new sentence of their own. Using a word is the real test of knowing it.

Questions people ask

Is the vocabulary test generator free?
Yes. Making, practicing and printing vocabulary tests is free, with no sign-up.
Do I have to type the meanings?
Yes, for your own words: the tests need a meaning for each word, and Eurekami never makes them up. The ready-made grade lists already have meanings and example sentences.
How does the read-aloud work?
It uses the voice built into your phone, tablet or computer. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. If a device has no voice, the test still works without sound.
Are my words saved?
No. They stay in your browser while the page is open, and the print link carries them in its address so the test can be printed. Nothing is stored.
How many words can a test have?
Up to 30. For matching, 8 to 12 words is the most comfortable on one page.
