Keeping math warm over the winter break
Two or three weeks without school is long enough for times tables and methods to get rusty. Ten or fifteen minutes every couple of days is enough to keep them fresh, and a sheet that ends in a snowman picture or a joke is easier to start than a page of plain sums.
- Color by number: solve the questions, color the squares, and a snowman or a mitten appears.
- Answer maze: each answer leads to the next square until you reach the finish.
- Riddle puzzle: the answers spell out a winter joke.
- Bingo: a game for a snowy afternoon with brothers, sisters or a whole class.
- Flashcards and practice worksheets with an optional answer key.
For teachers: the last week of term
Print a class set of bingo cards and a caller's list for a calm, useful lesson when attention is short. Color-by-number sheets make good early-finisher work, and because each sheet is new you can hand different versions to neighboring desks.
Choosing the right level
Holiday practice should feel like a win. Choose the band your child can mostly do alone, and step up a band if it is too easy. The topic pages linked below each set explain the method with a worked example and offer a free practice set that checks answers instantly.
