SAT math practice for the digital SAT

Practice for the Math section of the digital SAT: questions from all four content areas with hints and worked steps, a printable set with an answer key, and a plan for the weeks before test day.

The format

PartTimeWhat's in it
Math, module 135 minutes22 questions, a mix of easier and harder ones.
Math, module 235 minutes22 questions. Harder or easier depending on how module 1 went.

The SAT is taken on a computer or tablet in the Bluebook app. A graphing calculator (Desmos) is built in, and you can bring an approved calculator. About three in four math questions are multiple choice; the rest ask you to type your own answer. The Math section is scored from 200 to 800.

Question 1 of 100 correct

Votes for three games were in the ratio 4:3:5. The most popular game got 3 more votes than the first game. How many votes were there in total?

The four areas of SAT math

  • Algebra (about 35%): linear equations and inequalities, systems of two equations, and linear functions and their graphs.
  • Advanced math (about 35%): quadratics, exponents and radicals, polynomial and exponential functions, and equivalent expressions.
  • Problem-solving and data analysis (about 15%): ratios, rates, percentages, units, and reading data from tables, scatterplots and statistics.
  • Geometry and trigonometry (about 15%): area and volume, lines and angles, right triangles, trigonometric ratios and circles.

How the adaptive test works

Module 1 has a broad mix of difficulties. If it goes well, module 2 is harder, and only the harder route can reach the top scores. So the first module deserves your full care: an extra careless mistake there costs more than one point. A few questions in each module are trial questions that don't count, and you can't tell which ones they are, so treat every question as real.

Use Desmos, but know when not to

The built-in graphing calculator can solve many questions quickly: graph both sides of an equation and read the intersection, or graph a quadratic to find its vertex and zeros. Practice with it before test day so it feels natural. For simple arithmetic and short algebra, working on paper is often faster and avoids typing slips.

Student-produced response questions

For typed answers there are no options to check against, so accuracy matters more. Answers can be fractions or decimals, and negative answers are allowed. If a decimal is too long, enter as many digits as fit, or use the fraction instead.

A study plan

  1. 1Eight to twelve weeks beforeTake a full practice test to find your starting score and the content areas that cost the most points.
  2. 2Weeks 2 to 6Work through the weakest areas one at a time: concept first, then 20 to 30 practice questions, then a short mixed set.
  3. 3Weeks 6 to 10A full timed practice test every one or two weeks in the Bluebook app, reviewing every wrong answer.
  4. 4The last weekLight mixed practice, Desmos tricks, a good night's sleep and an early start on test day.

Exam tips

  • Read what the question actually asks: "the value of 2x" is not "the value of x".
  • Plug the answer choices back in when an equation looks messy.
  • Pick easy numbers to test expressions with variables, then compare with each choice.
  • Use the reference sheet for area, volume and special triangle formulas, but know them well enough not to need it.
  • Never leave a question blank: there is no penalty for wrong answers.

Questions people ask

How many math questions are on the SAT?
44, split into two modules of 22 questions with 35 minutes each, so 70 minutes in total.
Can you use a calculator on SAT math?
Yes, on every math question. A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the test app, and you can also bring an approved calculator.
What is a good SAT math score?
It depends on the colleges you're applying to. The Math section is scored from 200 to 800; check the middle 50% range of admitted students at each college you're interested in.
Is there a formula sheet on the SAT?
Yes. A reference sheet with common area, volume and triangle formulas is available in the test app.
Is SAT math harder than school math?
It mostly covers Algebra 1, Geometry and parts of Algebra 2. The challenge is usually the wording and the time limit rather than new topics.
