Spelling test generator
Type your spelling words and get a test in seconds: take it on screen with each word read aloud, or print a test with a word search, scramble, missing letters and more. Free, with nothing saved.

Take the test on screen
Each word is read aloud by your device. Type it, then see the score and practice the misses.
Print it
Every sheet comes with an answer key you can switch off.
How to use the spelling test generator
- Type or paste this week's spelling words, or start from one of the ready-made lists by grade.
- Press "Start the spelling test" to take it on screen. Your device reads each word aloud, your child types it, and the results show which words to practice.
- Or print: a spelling test sheet with numbered lines, plus six practice sheets made from the same words.
- Every sheet has an answer key (switch it off if you don't need it) and a "shuffle again" button for a new version.
The practice sheets
- Look, say, cover, write, check: the classic method for learning a word, in a ready-ruled table.
- Unscramble: the letters of each word are mixed up to write in the right order.
- Missing letters: a third of the letters are blanked out, with a word bank to help.
- ABC order: put the list in alphabetical order, which makes children look closely at each letter.
- Word search: the words hidden across, down and diagonally, never backwards.
- Rainbow writing: write each word three times in three colors.
A simple weekly spelling routine
Monday, read the words together and notice the pattern: the same ending, the same vowel team, or a tricky part. Tuesday to Thursday, ten minutes a day: one practice sheet, then a quick test on screen. Friday, the real test. Words that are still wrong go onto next week's list. Short daily practice beats one long session, and saying the letters out loud while writing helps them stick.
Why the test reads words aloud
Spelling is about turning sounds into letters, so a real spelling test is dictated, not copied. The on-screen test uses the voice built into your phone, tablet or computer: nothing is recorded, sent or saved, and there is a slow button for younger children. If a device has no voice, the test shows the word to a grown-up to read instead.
