Rounding calculator: nearest whole number, ten, hundred or decimal place
Type any number and choose the place to round to. The steps show which digit decides it, and a table shows the number rounded every way at once.
3,500
3,486.274 rounded to the nearest hundred
Steps
- Find the digit in the hundreds place (the place you are rounding to): it is 4.
- Look at the digit just to its right, in the tens place: it is 8.
- 8 is 5 or more, so round up: add 1 to the 4.
- Every digit after it becomes 0.
- Answer: 3,500.
| Nearest thousand | 3,000 |
|---|---|
| Nearest hundred | 3,500 |
| Nearest ten | 3,490 |
| Nearest whole number | 3,486 |
| Nearest tenth (1 dp) | 3,486.3 |
| Nearest hundredth (2 dp) | 3,486.27 |
| Nearest thousandth (3 dp) | 3,486.274 |
The rounding rule
- Find the place you're rounding to, and look at the digit in that place.
- Look at the digit just to its right.
- If it's 5 or more, round up: add 1 to your digit.
- If it's 4 or less, round down: your digit stays the same.
- Change every digit after your place to 0, or drop it if it's after the decimal point.
Worked example: round 3,486.274
To the nearest hundred, look at the hundreds digit, 4. The next digit is 8, which is 5 or more, so round up to 3,500. To the nearest whole number, look at the ones digit, 6. The next digit is 2, so round down to 3,486. To the nearest tenth, the tenths digit is 2 and the next is 7, so round up to 3,486.3.
Rounding up past a 9
When the digit you're rounding up is a 9, it becomes 0 and you carry 1 to the left, just like adding. 3,960 to the nearest hundred: the hundreds digit is 9, the next digit is 6, so the 9 becomes 10, giving 4,000. And 2.97 to the nearest tenth is 3.0, not 2.10.
Rounding on a number line
Rounding asks which multiple of ten, hundred or tenth a number is closest to. On a number line from 3,400 to 3,500, the number 3,486 sits much nearer 3,500, so that's where it rounds. A number exactly halfway, such as 3,450, is rounded up by the school rule.
Questions people ask
- How do you round to the nearest whole number?
- Look at the tenths digit, the first digit after the decimal point. If it's 5 or more, round up; otherwise round down and drop the decimals. 7.5 rounds to 8 and 7.49 rounds to 7.
- Does 5 round up or down?
- In school math, 5 rounds up: 45 to the nearest ten is 50. Some computers and banks use other rules for halves, but the 5-or-more rule is the one taught in school.
- How do you round to two decimal places?
- Look at the third decimal place. If it's 5 or more, add 1 to the second decimal place. 2.675 becomes 2.68 and 2.674 becomes 2.67.
- How do you round negative numbers?
- Round the size of the number the same way and keep the minus sign. −12.55 to the nearest tenth is −12.6.
- What grade learns rounding?
- In the US, rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 is grade 3 (3.NBT.A.1), any place in grade 4 (4.NBT.A.3), and decimals in grade 5 (5.NBT.A.4). In England, rounding starts in Year 3 and decimals are rounded in Years 4 to 6.
