Objective and success criteria

Students will: Area of compound shapes with missing lengths.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Area of composite rectilinear shapes; Perimeter of L-shapes and other rectilinear shapes

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Rulers and protractors, Squared or dotted paper, Shape cut-outs, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 6 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Area of composite rectilinear shapes; Perimeter of L-shapes and other rectilinear shapes). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. An L-shape is made by cutting a 5 cm by 2 cm rectangle from the corner of a 8 cm by 8 cm rectangle. What is the area of the L-shape, in cm²? → 54Prompt: Find the area of the big rectangle.
  2. An L-shape is made by cutting a small rectangle, 3 cm by 2 cm, from one corner of a big rectangle, 9 cm by 5 cm. What is the perimeter of the L-shape? → 28Prompt: Find all six side lengths of the L-shape.
  3. A garden is made of two rectangles: 4 ft × 5 ft and 4 ft × 5 ft. What is the total area, in ft²? → 40Prompt: Find the area of each rectangle.

Hook · 6 min

  • Show a photo of a building, a tile pattern or a road sign and ask what shapes and angles students can spot.
  • Share the objective: Area of compound shapes with missing lengths. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: An L-shape is made from a big rectangle, 14 m by 5 m, with a small rectangle, 4 m by 3 m, cut from one corner. What is its area?
  • Step 1: 14 × 5 = 70
  • Step 2: 4 × 3 = 12
  • Step 3: 70 − 12 = 58 m²
  • Answer: 58
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. An L-shape is made from a big rectangle, 13 m by 10 m, with a small rectangle, 11 m by 6 m, cut from one corner. What is its area? → 64Prompt: Find the area of the big rectangle.
  2. An L-shaped room: the bottom wall is 7 m, the left wall is 10 m, the top wall is 5 m and the right wall is 8 m. The other two walls are not labelled. What is the floor area? → 66Prompt: The missing lengths are 7 − 5 and 10 − 8.

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. An L-shape is made from a big rectangle, 6 m by 9 m, with a small rectangle, 4 m by 6 m, cut from one corner. What is its area? → 30Prompt: Find the area of the big rectangle.
  2. An L-shaped room: the bottom wall is 10 m, the left wall is 9 m, the top wall is 4 m and the right wall is 3 m. The other two walls are not labelled. What is the floor area? → 54Prompt: The missing lengths are 10 − 4 and 9 − 3.

Watch out for

  • Thinking a square turned on its corner is no longer a square.
  • Reading the wrong scale on a protractor.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Area of composite rectilinear shapes.
  • Use concrete materials: rulers and protractors.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
