Main clause or subordinate clause?

Grammar

CCSS L.3.1.ICCSS L.7.1.BEngland: Y5/6 GPS (main and subordinate clauses)England: KS2 SATs GPS

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Main clause or subordinate clause?.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Subordinating conjunctions: when, if, because, although, until; Simple or compound sentence?

Leads to: Semicolons between closely linked clauses

Materials: Sentence strips, Highlighters, Mini whiteboards, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Subordinating conjunctions: when, if, because, although, until; Simple or compound sentence?). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Choose the conjunction that makes the best sense. The ice cream melted ___ the sun was so hot. (until / unless / although / because) → becausePrompt: How are the two ideas linked? Time, reason, condition or contrast?
  2. Is this a simple sentence or a compound sentence? It was late, but nobody was tired. (simple sentence / compound sentence) → compound sentencePrompt: Count the subject–verb pairs. Each pair that could stand alone is a clause.
  3. Which word is the subordinating conjunction? You can play outside if you finish your lunch. (outside / play / finish / if) → ifPrompt: Find the word that joins two parts of the sentence.

Hook · 5 min

  • Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
  • Share the objective: Main clause or subordinate clause?. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Which part is the SUBORDINATE clause? We stayed indoors because it was cold.
  • Step 1: A main clause makes sense on its own. A subordinate clause adds information and depends on the main clause.
  • Step 2: So the answer is: because it was cold
  • Answer: because it was cold
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Which part is the SUBORDINATE clause? Before we left, we locked the door. (we locked the door / the door / Before we left) → Before we leftPrompt: A subordinate clause starts with a word like although, because, when, if, until, since, before, as or unless.
  2. Which part is the MAIN clause? Unless it snows, the match will go ahead. (Unless it snows / the match will go ahead / go ahead) → the match will go aheadPrompt: Cover each part. Which one could be a sentence by itself?

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Which part is the SUBORDINATE clause? When the bell rang, the children lined up. (the bell / the children lined up / When the bell rang) → When the bell rangPrompt: A subordinate clause starts with a word like although, because, when, if, until, since, before, as or unless.
  2. Which part is the MAIN clause? Since it was late, we took a taxi. (we took a taxi / late, we / Since it was late) → we took a taxiPrompt: Cover each part. Which one could be a sentence by itself?

Watch out for

  • Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
  • Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Subordinating conjunctions: when, if, because, although, until.
  • Use concrete materials: sentence strips.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Semicolons between closely linked clauses.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
