The subjunctive mood

Grammar

CCSS L.8.1.CEngland: Y6 GPS (subjunctive)England: KS2 SATs GPS

Objective and success criteria

Students will: The subjunctive mood.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Modal verbs and adverbs of possibility

Leads to: Verb moods and shifts in voice or mood; The subjunctive: if I were, I wish it were, I suggest she be

Materials: Sentence strips, Highlighters, Mini whiteboards, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Modal verbs and adverbs of possibility). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Choose the modal verb that fits best. You ___ wear a seatbelt in a car. It's the law. (may / might / could / must) → mustPrompt: How certain or necessary is the action?
  2. Read the question and choose. Which adverb shows the HIGHEST certainty? (definitely / maybe / perhaps / possibly) → definitelyPrompt: Put each word into a sentence like 'It ___ rain'.
  3. Choose the modal verb that fits best. I ___ swim when I was five. (could / shall / must / can) → couldPrompt: How certain or necessary is the action?

Hook · 5 min

  • Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
  • Share the objective: The subjunctive mood. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Choose the subjunctive form. If I ___ you, I would take an umbrella.
  • Step 1: The subjunctive is a formal verb form for wishes, imagined situations and demands.
  • Step 2: Imagined situations take 'were' (even with I, he, she, it).
  • Step 3: Put it back into the sentence and read it aloud: "If I were you, I would take an umbrella."
  • Step 4: So the answer is: were
  • Answer: were
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Choose the subjunctive form. I wish it ___ the weekend already. (were / is / be / was) → werePrompt: Is the sentence about something imagined (if…, I wish…) or a demand (insist that…, it is vital that…)?
  2. Choose the subjunctive form. The doctor recommended that she ___ in bed. (staying / stayed / stays / stay) → stayPrompt: Is the sentence about something imagined (if…, I wish…) or a demand (insist that…, it is vital that…)?

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Choose the subjunctive form. We insist that the dog ___ kept on a lead. (are / be / was / is) → bePrompt: Is the sentence about something imagined (if…, I wish…) or a demand (insist that…, it is vital that…)?
  2. Choose the subjunctive form. If I ___ you, I would take an umbrella. (was / were / be / am) → werePrompt: Is the sentence about something imagined (if…, I wish…) or a demand (insist that…, it is vital that…)?

Watch out for

  • Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
  • Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Modal verbs and adverbs of possibility.
  • Use concrete materials: sentence strips.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Verb moods and shifts in voice or mood; The subjunctive: if I were, I wish it were, I suggest she be.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
