Warm-up · 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Pronoun or noun? Make it clear who is meant; Pronouns). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Sam told Leo that he had won the prize. Why is this sentence unclear? (It should be a question. / It uses too many nouns. / It has no verb. / We can't tell whether 'he' means Sam or Leo.) → We can't tell whether 'he' means Sam or Leo.Prompt: Find each pronoun (he, she, it, her, they).
  2. Choose the pronoun that fits. Lucy has a kite. ___ flies it on windy days. (He / It / She / They) → ShePrompt: Who or what is the gap talking about?

They switched on their lights and beeped.) → The robot rolled into the room. It switched on its lights and beeped.Prompt: Repeating the same noun again and again sounds clumsy.

Hook · 5 min

  • Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
  • Share the objective: I or me? Sam and I, Sam and me. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Choose the correct pronoun. Omar and ___ built the model together.
  • Step 1: Use I/he/she/we as the subject; use me/him/her/us as the object or after a preposition.
  • Step 2: Put it back into the sentence and read it aloud: "Omar and I built the model together."
  • Step 3: So the answer is: I
  • Answer: I
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Choose the correct pronoun. Mo and ___ are in the same class. (he / him) → hePrompt: Cover up the other person's name and read the sentence with just the pronoun.
  2. Which sentence uses Standard English? (My friends and I went camping. / Me and my friends went camping. / Myself and my friends went camping. / My friends and me went camping.) → My friends and I went camping.Prompt: Try each sentence with only the pronoun: 'I baked a cake' or 'me baked a cake'?

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Choose the correct pronoun. I sat next to Mo and ___. (him / he) → himPrompt: Cover up the other person's name and read the sentence with just the pronoun.
  2. Which sentence uses Standard English? (Gran made pancakes for I and Leo. / Gran made pancakes for Leo and I. / Gran made pancakes for Leo and myself. / Gran made pancakes for Leo and me.) → Gran made pancakes for Leo and me.Prompt: Try each sentence with only the pronoun: 'I baked a cake' or 'me baked a cake'?

Watch out for

  • Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
  • Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Pronoun or noun? Make it clear who is meant.
  • Use concrete materials: sentence strips.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
