Warm-up · 4 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Add within 20; Story problems: joining groups (to 10)). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Isla has 3 balls. Liam gives Isla 3 more. How many balls does Isla have now? → 6Prompt: Isla gets more, so the amount grows.
- Daniel collected 5 balls in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. How many is that altogether? → 10Prompt: Do we join the groups or take away?
- Ava has 3 marbles. Kwame gives Ava 4 more. How many marbles does Ava have now? → 7Prompt: Ava gets more, so the amount grows.
Hook · 3 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: Story problems: adding on and putting together (to 20). Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Noah has 9 strawberries. Maya gives Noah 3 more. How many strawberries does Noah have now?
- Step 1: 9 + 3 = 12
- Step 2: 12
- Answer: 12
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Diego has 5 buttons. Liam gives Diego 5 more. How many buttons does Diego have now? → 10Prompt: Diego gets more, so the amount grows.
- There are 7 birds on the table and 5 birds in a box. How many birds are there altogether? → 12Prompt: Altogether means put both groups together.
You do: independent practice · 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Lucia has 8 books. Elena has 3 more books than Lucia. How many books does Elena have? → 11Prompt: Who has more, Lucia or Elena?
- There are 7 crayons on the table and 9 crayons in a box. How many crayons are there altogether? → 16Prompt: Altogether means put both groups together.
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 − 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Add within 20.
- Use concrete materials: base-ten blocks.

Stretch
- Move on to: Story problems: find the missing change.
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
