- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- There are 11 apples in a box and 5 on the table. How many apples are there in all? → 16Prompt: Do we join the groups or take away?

- Share the objective: Word problems within 20. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Elena had some books. After getting 5 more, Elena has 11. How many books did Elena have at first?
- Step 1: 11 − 5 = 6
- Answer: 6
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Aisha had some books. After getting 9 more, Aisha has 13. How many books did Aisha have at first? → 4Prompt: We know the end amount and how many were added.
- At the pond Liam sees 4 ducks, 6 frogs and 5 fish. How many animals is that? → 15Prompt: Add all three numbers.
You do: independent practice · 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Zoe had some books. After getting 3 more, Zoe has 11. How many books did Zoe have at first? → 8Prompt: We know the end amount and how many were added.

- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 − 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
