- Quick retrieval: three short questions students should already manage. Answers on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Which word is something you can do (an action)? book, apple, hop, dog (book / apple / hop / dog) → hopPrompt: Can you say 'I can ___'? (I can jump)
- Which word is something you can do (an action)? kite, dog, draw, hat (kite / dog / draw / hat) → drawPrompt: Can you say 'I can ___'? (I can jump)

Hook · 3 min
- Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
- Share the objective: Naming words and action words. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Which word names a thing you can touch? wave, shoe, throw, hop
- Step 1: "shoe" is a naming word (a noun): you can say "the shoe".
- Step 2: So the answer is: shoe
- Answer: shoe
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Which word is something you can do (an action)? door, bed, sing, shoe (door / bed / sing / shoe) → singPrompt: Can you say 'I can ___'? (I can jump)
- Which word names a thing you can touch? dig, kite, laugh, fly (dig / kite / laugh / fly) → kitePrompt: Can you put 'a' or 'the' in front of it? (a dog, the cup)
You do: independent practice · 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Which word is something you can do (an action)? cat, door, eat, bus (cat / door / eat / bus) → eatPrompt: Can you say 'I can ___'? (I can jump)
- Which word is something you can do (an action)? kite, sock, jump, bus (kite / sock / jump / bus) → jumpPrompt: Can you say 'I can ___'? (I can jump)
Watch out for
- Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
- Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.
