Before and after

Needs first: Pronoun or noun? Make it clear who is meant; Pronouns

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Warm-up · 4 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Pronoun or noun? Make it clear who is meant; Pronouns). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Grandpa and Dad fixed the shed, and then he made tea. Why is this sentence unclear? (It needs more adjectives. / It should say 'shed's'. / It has two verbs. / We can't tell who made the tea.) → We can't tell who made the tea.Prompt: Find each pronoun (he, she, it, her, they).
  2. Choose the pronoun that fits. The cookies smell great. Can I eat one of ___? (they / them / it / us) → themPrompt: Who or what is the gap talking about?

They tested it on it, and it floated!) → Leo and Omar built a raft. They tested it on the pond, and it floated!Prompt: Repeating the same noun again and again sounds clumsy.

Hook · 3 min

  • Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
  • Share the objective: I or me? Sam and I, Sam and me. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Choose the correct pronoun. Omar and ___ built the model together.
  • Step 1: Use I/he/she/we as the subject; use me/him/her/us as the object or after a preposition.
  • Step 2: Put it back into the sentence and read it aloud: "Omar and I built the model together."
  • Step 3: So the answer is: I
  • Answer: I
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Choose the correct pronoun. The teacher gave Leo and ___ a sticker. (me / I) → mePrompt: Cover up the other person's name and read the sentence with just the pronoun.
  2. Which sentence uses Standard English? (The letter was addressed to Ana and me. / The letter was addressed to I and Ana. / The letter was addressed to Ana and I. / The letter was addressed to Ana and myself.) → The letter was addressed to Ana and me.Prompt: Try each sentence with only the pronoun: 'I baked a cake' or 'me baked a cake'?

You do: independent practice · 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Which sentence uses Standard English? (Me and Leo baked a cake. / Leo and myself baked a cake. / Leo and I baked a cake. / Leo and me baked a cake.) → Leo and I baked a cake.Prompt: Try each sentence with only the pronoun: 'I baked a cake' or 'me baked a cake'?
  2. Choose the correct pronoun. The teacher gave Leo and ___ a sticker. (I / me) → mePrompt: Cover up the other person's name and read the sentence with just the pronoun.

Watch out for

  • Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
  • Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Pronoun or noun? Make it clear who is meant.
  • Use concrete materials: sentence strips.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
