Solve absolute value equations |ax + b| = c

Algebra

CCSS HSA.CED.A.1CCSS HSA.REI.B.3

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Solve absolute value equations |ax + b| = c.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Negative numbers and absolute value; Two-step equations

Leads to: Count the solutions of an absolute value equation; Solve absolute value inequalities

Materials: Balance scales or a balance drawing, Algebra tiles, Function machine cards, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up Β· 4 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Negative numbers and absolute value; Two-step equations). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. The temperature is βˆ’8 Β°C at noon and βˆ’11 Β°C at night. By how many degrees did it fall? β†’ 3Prompt: Find the distance between the two numbers on the number line.
  2. The temperature is 2 Β°C at noon and βˆ’5 Β°C at night. By how many degrees did it fall? β†’ 7Prompt: Find the distance between the two numbers on the number line.
  3. The temperature is βˆ’5 Β°C at noon and βˆ’14 Β°C at night. By how many degrees did it fall? β†’ 9Prompt: Find the distance between the two numbers on the number line.

Hook Β· 3 min

  • Show a "think of a number" puzzle and ask the class to work out the starting number.
  • Share the objective: Solve absolute value equations |ax + b| = c. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it Β· 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Solve: |x βˆ’ 7| = 9. Give both solutions, separated by a comma.
  • Step 1: x βˆ’ 7 = 9 β†’ x = 16
  • Step 2: x βˆ’ 7 = βˆ’9 β†’ x = βˆ’2
  • Step 3: x = βˆ’2, x = 16
  • Answer: x = -2 or x = 16
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice Β· 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Solve: |x + 3| = 8. Give both solutions, separated by a comma. β†’ x = -11 or x = 5Prompt: The expression inside can be 8 or βˆ’8.
  2. Solve: |4x + 14| = 6. Give both solutions, separated by a comma. β†’ x = -5 or x = -2Prompt: Split into 4x + 14 = 6 and 4x + 14 = βˆ’6.

You do: independent practice Β· 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket Β· 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Solve: |x βˆ’ 7| = 11. Give both solutions, separated by a comma. β†’ x = -4 or x = 18Prompt: The expression inside can be 11 or βˆ’11.
  2. Solve: |5x βˆ’ 20| = 5. Give both solutions, separated by a comma. β†’ x = 3 or x = 5Prompt: Split into 5x βˆ’ 20 = 5 and 5x βˆ’ 20 = βˆ’5.

Watch out for

  • Doing an operation to one side of an equation but not the other.
  • Reading 3x as 3 + x, or thinking x always stands for one particular number.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Negative numbers and absolute value.
  • Use concrete materials: balance scales or a balance drawing.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Count the solutions of an absolute value equation; Solve absolute value inequalities.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
