  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Which sentence is the passive version of this sentence? A bee stung my brother. • My brother was stung by a bee. • My brother was stinged by a bee. • My brother stung a bee. • A bee was stung by my brother. • Share the objective: Verb moods and shifts in voice or mood. Read the success criteria together.

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: What is the mood of the verb in this sentence? The committee demands that he resign.
  • Step 1: Indicative = facts and statements; imperative = commands; interrogative = questions; conditional = what would happen; subjunctive = wishes, demands, hypotheticals.

  • Answer: subjunctive
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

  • Naming the feature but not using it in their own sentences.
  • Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.

Support and stretch

  • Use concrete materials: sentence strips.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Conditionals (zero, first, second, third); The subjunctive: if I were, I wish it were, I suggest she be.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
