Before and after
Needs first: Nouns and verbs
Leads to: the next skill in this area.
Materials: Sentence strips, Highlighters, Mini whiteboards, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).

- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Nouns and verbs). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Which word is a noun (a person, place, animal or thing)? The bird sings in the tree. (sings / the / in / bird) → birdPrompt: Nouns name things. Can you put 'the' or 'a' in front of it?
- Which word is a verb (an action word)? Leo threw the stick for the dog. (dog / stick / Leo / threw) → threwPrompt: A verb tells you what someone or something does.
- Which word fits the gap? Is the gap a noun or a verb? The ___ barked all night. (loud / barked / slowly / dog) → dogPrompt: Read the sentence and think: does the gap need a thing or an action?
Hook · 5 min
- Show a sentence with the grammar point used wrongly and ask what sounds odd.
- Share the objective: this, that, these or those?. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Read the clue in brackets. Which word fits? (Lots of shoes, right here) ___ shoes are mine.
- Step 1: Near: this (one), these (many). Far: that (one), those (many).
- Step 2: Put it back into the sentence and read it aloud: "These shoes are mine."
- Step 3: So the answer is: These
- Answer: These
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Read the clue in brackets. Which word fits? (One bird, far away in the sky) Look at ___ bird! (those / these / this / that) → thatPrompt: Is it one thing or more than one?
- Change the sentence. Type the word that goes in the gap. This puppy is sleepy. → ___ puppies are sleepy. → ThesePrompt: Has the sentence changed from one to many, or from many to one?
You do: independent practice · 10 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.

- Thinking a sentence is right because it sounds right when spoken casually.
