Math lesson plan Β· 1st grade (Year 2 in England) Β· 60 minutes
Read tally charts and pictograms
Statistics and probability
CCSS 1.MD.C.4England: Y2 Statistics
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Read tally charts and pictograms.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Count to 20; Compare numbers to 10
Leads to: Bar graphs: compare and total
Materials: Squared paper for charts, Class survey data, Sticky notes for a live chart, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Count to 20; Compare numbers to 10). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Fill in the missing number: 14, __, 16, 17, 18 β 15Prompt: The numbers go up by 1 each time. What comes after the number before the gap?
- Fill in the missing number: 13, __, 15, 16, 17 β 14Prompt: The numbers go up by 1 each time. What comes after the number before the gap?
- Fill in the missing number: 11, __, 13, 14, 15 β 12Prompt: The numbers go up by 1 each time. What comes after the number before the gap?
Hook Β· 6 min
- Take a quick class survey (favorite fruit, travel to school) and ask what the results tell us.
- Share the objective: Read tally charts and pictograms. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: What number does this tally show? ε ε | (ε = a bundle of 5)
- Step 1: 2 Γ 5 + 1 = 11
- Answer: 11
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- What number does this tally show? ||| (ε = a bundle of 5) β 3Prompt: Each bundle with a line across counts as 5.
- What number does this tally show? ε ε ε | (ε = a bundle of 5) β 16Prompt: Each bundle with a line across counts as 5.
You do: independent practice Β· 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- What number does this tally show? ε ε (ε = a bundle of 5) β 10Prompt: Each bundle with a line across counts as 5.
- What number does this tally show? ε ||| (ε = a bundle of 5) β 8Prompt: Each bundle with a line across counts as 5.
Watch out for
- Forgetting to put data in order before finding the median.
- Reading a bar's height wrongly when the scale goes up in 2s or 5s.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Count to 20.
- Use concrete materials: squared paper for charts.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Move on to: Bar graphs: compare and total.
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
