Convert between degrees and radians

Trigonometry

CCSS HSF.TF.A.1England: A-level Pure Mathematics

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Convert between degrees and radians.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: The unit circle and radians

Leads to: Arc length and sector area in radians

Materials: Scientific calculators, Protractors and rulers, Right-triangle diagrams, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 6 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (The unit circle and radians). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Convert 30° to radians (in terms of π). (3π/4 / 5π/6 / π/6 / 3π/2) → π/6Prompt: A half turn is π radians.
  2. Is cos 240° positive, zero or negative? (Positive / Zero / Negative) → NegativePrompt: On the unit circle, cos is the x-coordinate and sin is the y-coordinate.
  3. Convert 360° to radians (in terms of π). (2π / π/6 / 3π/2 / π/2) → 2πPrompt: A half turn is π radians.

Hook · 6 min

  • Show a ramp or a ladder against a wall and ask how steep it is.
  • Share the objective: Convert between degrees and radians. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Write 180° in radians, as a multiple of Ï€.
  • Step 1: 180 × Ï€/180 = Ï€
  • Answer: Ï€
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Write 180° in radians, as a multiple of π. (3π/4 / 3π/2 / π / π/3) → πPrompt: 180° = π radians.
  2. Convert 2π/3 radians to degrees. → 120Prompt: Replace π with 180°.

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Convert 3π/4 radians to degrees. → 135Prompt: Replace π with 180°.
  2. Write 225° in radians, as a multiple of π. (π/3 / 5π/4 / 2π/3 / π/2) → 5π/4Prompt: 180° = π radians.

Watch out for

  • Mixing up opposite and adjacent sides.
  • Calculator in radians instead of degrees.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: The unit circle and radians.
  • Use concrete materials: scientific calculators.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Arc length and sector area in radians.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
