Angles of elevation and depression
Trigonometry
CCSS HSG.SRT.C.8England: GCSE Foundation GeometryEngland: GCSE Higher Geometry
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Angles of elevation and depression.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Trigonometric ratios: SOH CAH TOA
Leads to: the next skill in this area.
Materials: Scientific calculators, Protractors and rulers, Right-triangle diagrams, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Trigonometric ratios: SOH CAH TOA). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- A ramp rises at 37° over a horizontal distance of 13 m. How high does it rise? Give 1 decimal place. → 9.8Prompt: You know the adjacent side and want the opposite: use tan.
- A ramp rises at 25° over a horizontal distance of 7 m. How high does it rise? Give 1 decimal place. → 3.3Prompt: You know the adjacent side and want the opposite: use tan.
- A ramp rises at 42° over a horizontal distance of 14 m. How high does it rise? Give 1 decimal place. → 12.6Prompt: You know the adjacent side and want the opposite: use tan.
Hook · 6 min
- Show a ramp or a ladder against a wall and ask how steep it is.
- Share the objective: Angles of elevation and depression. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Maya stands 19 m from the base of a tower. The angle of elevation to the top is 17°. How tall is the tower, to the nearest metre? (Ignore Maya's height.)
- Step 1: h = 19 × tan 17° ≈ 5.81
- Step 2: ≈ 6 m
- Answer: 6
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Felix stands 53 m from the base of a tower. The angle of elevation to the top is 26°. How tall is the tower, to the nearest metre? (Ignore Felix's height.) → 26Prompt: Draw the right triangle: ground, tower, line of sight.
- From the top of a 67 m cliff, the angle of depression to a boat is 20°. How far is the boat from the foot of the cliff? Round to the nearest metre. → 184Prompt: The angle of depression equals the angle of elevation from the boat (alternate angles).
You do: independent practice · 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Aisha stands 78 m from the base of a tower. The angle of elevation to the top is 28°. How tall is the tower, to the nearest metre? (Ignore Aisha's height.) → 41Prompt: Draw the right triangle: ground, tower, line of sight.
- From the top of a 116 m cliff, the angle of depression to a boat is 59°. How far is the boat from the foot of the cliff? Round to the nearest metre. → 70Prompt: The angle of depression equals the angle of elevation from the boat (alternate angles).
Watch out for
- Mixing up opposite and adjacent sides.
- Calculator in radians instead of degrees.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Trigonometric ratios: SOH CAH TOA.
- Use concrete materials: scientific calculators.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
