Objective and success criteria

Students will: Using context clues.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Synonyms

Leads to: Words with more than one meaning; Academic vocabulary in context (SAT/ACT); Word meaning in a text

Materials: Word cards, A thesaurus or dictionary, A short text with the target words, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 6 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Synonyms). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Which word means the SAME as "brave"? (cowardly / patient / courageous / jealous) → courageousPrompt: A synonym has the same or nearly the same meaning.
  2. Which word is closest in meaning to "sincere"? (vague / honest / elegant / deceitful) → honestPrompt: One of the choices means the opposite. Don't be tricked!
  3. Choose the word that best fits the clue in brackets. The mouse ___ across the floor. (ran quickly and lightly) (crawled / strolled / stomped / scurried) → scurriedPrompt: Read the clue in brackets carefully.

Hook · 6 min

  • Show an interesting word in a sentence and ask what it might mean from the clues around it.
  • Share the objective: Using context clues. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Use the clues in the sentence. What does the word in brackets mean? The room was so dim that we could hardly see. (dim)
  • Step 1: Context clues are hints in the sentence that help you work out a word's meaning.
  • Step 2: So the answer is: not bright
  • Answer: not bright
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Use the clues in the sentence. What does the word in brackets mean? We had to postpone the match because of the storm, so we will play next week. (postpone) (watch on TV / put off until later / win easily / cancel forever) → put off until laterPrompt: Look at the other words in the sentence. What do they tell you?
  2. Use context clues. What does the word in brackets most likely mean? The scientist's hypothesis was corroborated when three other labs got the same result. (corroborated) (confirmed / ignored / delayed / disproved) → confirmedPrompt: Look for signal words: unlike, despite, so…that, a colon or dash that explains.

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Use the clues in the sentence. What does the word in brackets mean? The water was so murky that we couldn't see the fish. (murky) (cloudy and dark / crystal clear / very deep / freezing cold) → cloudy and darkPrompt: Look at the other words in the sentence. What do they tell you?
  2. Use context clues. What does the word in brackets most likely mean? The once-bustling market was now desolate; not a single stall remained. (desolate) (empty and bleak / expensive / crowded / cheerful) → empty and bleakPrompt: Look for signal words: unlike, despite, so…that, a colon or dash that explains.

Watch out for

  • Picking a "bigger" synonym that doesn't fit the meaning.
  • Ignoring the clues in the rest of the sentence.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Synonyms.
  • Use concrete materials: word cards.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Words with more than one meaning; Academic vocabulary in context (SAT/ACT); Word meaning in a text.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
