Addition and subtraction
CCSS K.OA.A.3England: Reception NumberEngland: Y1 Addition and subtraction
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: All the ways to make 5
Leads to: How many are hiding? Find the missing part (to 10)
Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (All the ways to make 5). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- 1 + __ = 5 → 4Prompt: Hold up 1 finger on one hand. How many more make a full hand?
- 5 diamonds are split into two boxes. One box has 3. How many are in the other box? ◆ ◆ ◆ | ? → 2Prompt: The two boxes together hold 5.
- Which of these makes 5? (3 + 4 / 2 + 4 / 2 + 3 / 1 + 3) → 2 + 3Prompt: Work out each sum.
Hook · 6 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: 6 = 5 + __
- Step 1: 5 + 1 = 6
- Step 2: 1
- Answer: 1
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- 8 = 5 + __ → 3Prompt: Start at 5 and count on to 8.
- Luis has 7 leaves. 3 are red and the rest are blue. How many are blue? → 4Prompt: The red ones and blue ones together make 7.
You do: independent practice · 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Which pair does NOT make 6? (3 + 4 / 3 + 3 / 5 + 1) → 3 + 4Prompt: Add each pair.
- Noah has 9 toy cars. 5 are red and the rest are blue. How many are blue? → 4Prompt: The red ones and blue ones together make 9.
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 − 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: All the ways to make 5.
- Use concrete materials: base-ten blocks.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Move on to: How many are hiding? Find the missing part (to 10).
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
