Days of the week
Measurement
CCSS 1.MD.B.3England: Y1 Measurement
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Days of the week.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Positions in a line: first to tenth
Leads to: Months of the year; Use a calendar: dates, days and weeks
Materials: Rulers, scales and measuring jugs, Clock faces, Conversion chart, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Positions in a line: first to tenth). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Animals line up. From the front: frog, bear, lion, dog, monkey, duck, rabbit. Which animal is fourth? (dog / lion / bear / rabbit) → dogPrompt: The first animal is at the front of the line.
- From the front of the line: horse, frog, rabbit, lion, duck, tiger, dog, monkey, bear, cat. Where is the tiger? (eighth / sixth / seventh / fifth) → sixthPrompt: Find the tiger in the list.
- Ethan is sixth in the lunch queue. How many children are in front of Ethan? → 5Prompt: Being sixth means there are some children before Ethan.
Hook · 6 min
- Ask the class to estimate the length of the room or the weight of a bag before measuring it.
- Share the objective: Days of the week. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Which day comes after Saturday?
- Step 1: Sunday
- Answer: Sunday
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Which day comes after Thursday? (Tuesday / Saturday / Friday / Wednesday) → FridayPrompt: Say the days in order: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…
- Today is Friday. What day will it be in 4 days? (Monday / Tuesday / Saturday / Wednesday) → TuesdayPrompt: Count on 4 days, one at a time.
You do: independent practice · 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- How many days are there in 3 weeks? → 21Prompt: Count the days from Monday to Sunday.
- Which day comes after Sunday? (Saturday / Tuesday / Friday / Monday) → MondayPrompt: Say the days in order: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…
Watch out for
- Measuring from the end of the ruler instead of zero.
- Converting units the wrong way (multiplying instead of dividing).
Support and stretch
Support

- Use concrete materials: rulers, scales and measuring jugs.
