Read hundredths from a hundred square

Decimals and percentages

CCSS 4.NF.C.6England: Y4 Fractions (including decimals)

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Read hundredths from a hundred square.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Tenths and hundredths as decimals

Leads to: Understand per cent as 'out of 100'

Materials: Place value chart with tenths and hundredths, Hundred squares, Number lines, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 6 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Tenths and hundredths as decimals). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. What is the value of the digit 6 in 6.68? → 0.6Prompt: Name the places: ones . tenths hundredths.
  2. What is the value of the digit 4 in 4.18? → 4Prompt: Name the places: ones . tenths hundredths.
  3. What is the value of the digit 2 in 6.92? → 0.02Prompt: Name the places: ones . tenths hundredths.

Hook · 6 min

  • Show two prices or race times with decimals and ask which is bigger, then why.
  • Share the objective: Read hundredths from a hundred square. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: 73 small squares out of 100 are shaded. Write the shaded part as a decimal.
  • Step 1: 73/100 = 0.73
  • Answer: 0.73
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. 67 small squares out of 100 are shaded. Write the shaded part as a decimal. → 0.67Prompt: 67 out of 100 is 67 hundredths.
  2. Yuki says 66/100 = 6.6. Is Yuki right? Write the correct decimal. → 0.66Prompt: Is it tenths or hundredths?

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. 92 small squares out of 100 are shaded. Write the shaded part as a decimal. → 0.92Prompt: 92 out of 100 is 92 hundredths.
  2. Daniel says 56/100 = 5.6. Is Daniel right? Write the correct decimal. → 0.56Prompt: Is it tenths or hundredths?

Watch out for

  • Thinking 0.45 is bigger than 0.5 because 45 is bigger than 5.
  • Moving the digits the wrong way when multiplying or dividing by 10.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Tenths and hundredths as decimals.
  • Use concrete materials: place value chart with tenths and hundredths.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Understand per cent as 'out of 100'.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
