Objective and success criteria
Students will: Take away with pictures (to 10).
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Take away with pictures (to 5); Count pictures from 6 to 10
Leads to: Story problems: taking away (to 10); Match a number sentence to a picture or story
Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Take away with pictures (to 5); Count pictures from 6 to 10). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- There were 2. The β ones were taken away. How many are left? β β β 1Prompt: Do not count the crossed-out ones.
- 4 birds are in the pond. 2 fly away. How many birds are still in the pond? β 2Prompt: Hold up 4 fingers.
- How many triangles are there? β² β² β² β² β² β² β² β 7Prompt: The top line has 5. Start at 5 and keep counting.
Hook Β· 6 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: Take away with pictures (to 10). Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: There were 8. The β ones were taken away. How many are left? β β β β β β β β
- Step 1: 8 β 6 = 2
- Step 2: 2
- Answer: 2
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- There were 8. The β ones were taken away. How many are left? β² β² β² β² β² β β β β 5Prompt: Count only the pictures without a β.
- There are 10 dots in the ten frame. Take away 3. How many are left? β β β β β β β β β β β 7Prompt: Cover 3 dots with your fingers.
You do: independent practice Β· 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Kai had 10 marbles and 4 were used for a craft. How many marbles are left? β 6Prompt: Some were used, so there are fewer now.
- There are 9 dots in the ten frame. Take away 8. How many are left? β β β β β β β β β β β 1Prompt: Cover 8 dots with your fingers.
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 β 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Take away with pictures (to 5).
- Use concrete materials: base-ten blocks.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.

Stretch
- Move on to: Story problems: taking away (to 10); Match a number sentence to a picture or story.
