Objective and success criteria

Students will: Timetables and time problems.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: 12-hour and 24-hour clock; Elapsed time

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Rulers, scales and measuring jugs, Clock faces, Conversion chart, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 6 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (12-hour and 24-hour clock; Elapsed time). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Write 10:15 a.m. using the 24-hour clock. Type it like 14:05. → 10:15Prompt: Morning times keep the same hour; write it with two digits.
  2. A train leaves at 23:50. What is this on a 12-hour clock? Type it like 2:05 (it is p.m.). → 11:50Prompt: Subtract 12 from the hour.
  3. Write 7:10 p.m. using the 24-hour clock. Type it like 14:05. → 19:10Prompt: For p.m. times, add 12 to the hour.

Hook · 6 min

  • Ask the class to estimate the length of the room or the weight of a bag before measuring it.
  • Share the objective: Timetables and time problems. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Bus timetable: Market Square 17:25, Harbour 17:55, Hill Park 18:50. How many minutes does the bus take from Market Square to Hill Park?
  • Step 1: 17:25 → 18:50
  • Step 2: 30 + 55 = 85 min
  • Answer: 85
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Bus timetable: Market Square 16:20, Hill Park 17:15, Harbour 17:30. How many minutes does the bus take from Market Square to Harbour? → 70Prompt: Find the time between the first and last stop.
  2. Bus timetable: Market Square 14:00, Old Town 14:50, Hill Park 15:20. How many minutes does the bus take from Market Square to Hill Park? → 80Prompt: Find the time between the first and last stop.

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Bus timetable: Market Square 07:25, Old Town 08:15, Harbour 09:20. How many minutes does the bus take from Market Square to Harbour? → 115Prompt: Find the time between the first and last stop.
  2. Bus timetable: Harbour 20:30, Riverside 21:05, Old Town 22:00. How many minutes does the bus take from Harbour to Old Town? → 90Prompt: Find the time between the first and last stop.

Watch out for

  • Measuring from the end of the ruler instead of zero.
  • Converting units the wrong way (multiplying instead of dividing).

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: 12-hour and 24-hour clock.
  • Use concrete materials: rulers, scales and measuring jugs.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
