Objective and success criteria
Students will: How characters change.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Character traits and motives
Leads to: Literary analysis: theme, symbol, ambiguity
Materials: A short text or extract (one copy each), Highlighters, Question cards, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Character traits and motives). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Jon always checked his work twice, sharpened his pencils before every test and kept his desk perfectly neat. Which word best describes Jon? (messy / careful / forgetful / rude) β carefulPrompt: What does the character say and do?
- Raf took the biggest slice of cake, then grabbed the last cookie before anyone else could. Which word best describes Raf? (generous / greedy / patient / shy) β greedyPrompt: What does the character say and do?
- "I'm the fastest runner in the whole school," Kyle said for the tenth time that day. "Nobody can beat me." Which word best describes Kyle? (kind / nervous / modest / boastful) β boastfulPrompt: What does the character say and do?
Hook Β· 6 min
- Read the first lines of a short text aloud and ask what students predict will happen and why.
- Share the objective: How characters change. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: When Ade joined the band, he refused to play any song he hadn't chosen. After a disastrous concert where nobody followed the plan, he began asking the others for ideas β and the next show was their best ever. How does Ade change?
- Step 1: A character's words and actions reveal what they are like and what they want.
- Step 2: So the answer is: He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way.
- Answer: He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way.
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- When Ade joined the band, he refused to play any song he hadn't chosen. After a disastrous concert where nobody followed the plan, he began asking the others for ideas β and the next show was their best ever. How does Ade change? (He leaves the band. / He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way. / He stops playing music. / He becomes more stubborn.) β He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way.Prompt: What does the character say and do?
- Marcus wanted the prize money for himself. But after seeing how hard his teammates had worked, he insisted on sharing it equally. What causes Marcus to change? (His parents' orders / A rule change / Recognising his teammates' effort / Losing the competition) β Recognising his teammates' effortPrompt: What does the character say and do?
You do: independent practice Β· 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- When Ade joined the band, he refused to play any song he hadn't chosen. After a disastrous concert where nobody followed the plan, he began asking the others for ideas β and the next show was their best ever. How does Ade change? (He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way. / He becomes more stubborn. / He leaves the band. / He stops playing music.) β He learns to collaborate instead of insisting on his own way.Prompt: What does the character say and do?
Watch out for
- Answering from memory or opinion instead of evidence in the text.
- Copying a long quote without explaining what it shows.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Character traits and motives.
- Use concrete materials: a short text or extract (one copy each).
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Move on to: Literary analysis: theme, symbol, ambiguity.
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
