  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Choose the sign: 725 __ 729 (< / > / =) → <Prompt: Compare the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones.
  2. In 4065, which place is the digit 4 in? (ones / tens / hundreds / thousands) → thousandsPrompt: Name the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.

Hook · 6 min

  • Share the objective: Compare four-digit numbers. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 12 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Choose the sign: 2344 __ 2344
  • Step 1: 2344 = 2344
  • Answer: =
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 12 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Choose the sign: 3520 __ 3524 (< / > / =) → <Prompt: Compare the thousands digits first.
  2. Which number is the smallest? (9468 / 9467 / 9590 / 9517) → 9467Prompt: Line the numbers up by place value.

You do: independent practice · 17 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 7 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Kofi walked 8224 steps today and Diego walked 8247 steps. Who walked more steps? (Kofi / Diego) → DiegoPrompt: Both numbers have four digits, so compare from the left.
  2. Which number is the smallest? (3616 / 3787 / 3615 / 3705) → 3615Prompt: Line the numbers up by place value.

Watch out for

  • Thinking a longer number is always bigger, even with decimals (0.45 vs 0.5).
