Alkanes and the fractions of crude oil
Chemical reactions, acids and bases
CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-1CCSS NGSS.HS-ESS3-2England: GCSE Combined Science: Organic chemistry
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Alkanes and the fractions of crude oil.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Choose the right technique to separate a mixture
Leads to: Cracking, alkenes and the bromine water test
Materials: Teacher demo or video, Indicator color chart, Mini whiteboards, A diagram or short video clip of the idea, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 6 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Choose the right technique to separate a mixture). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Which technique is best to separate food colourings in a sweet coating? (simple distillation / filtration / chromatography / evaporation or crystallisation) β chromatographyPrompt: Is the solid dissolved or not? Do you want to keep the liquid?
- Why is the filtrate clear after filtering muddy water? (The filter paper adds chemicals / The solid particles are too big to pass through the filter paper / The mud dissolves / Water evaporates) β The solid particles are too big to pass through the filter paperPrompt: Filter paper has tiny holes.
- Which technique is best to separate the fractions in crude oil? (evaporation or crystallisation / fractional distillation / chromatography / simple distillation) β fractional distillationPrompt: Is the solid dissolved or not? Do you want to keep the liquid?
Hook Β· 6 min
- Drop an antacid tablet in water (or show a clip) and ask whether a new substance is being made.
- Share the objective: Alkanes and the fractions of crude oil. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 12 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Alkanes have the general formula CβHββββ. How many hydrogen atoms are in an alkane with 11 carbon atoms?
- Step 1: 2 Γ 11 + 2 = 24
- Step 2: So the answer is: 24
- Answer: 24
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 12 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Alkanes have the general formula CβHββββ. How many hydrogen atoms are in an alkane with 4 carbon atoms? β 10Prompt: Substitute n into 2n + 2.
- How does fractional distillation separate crude oil? (Each fraction is filtered out / The oil is frozen in layers / A magnet pulls out each fraction / Hydrocarbons condense at different heights of a column depending on their boiling points) β Hydrocarbons condense at different heights of a column depending on their boiling pointsPrompt: The column is hot at the bottom and cooler at the top.
You do: independent practice Β· 17 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 7 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- How does fractional distillation separate crude oil? (Each fraction is filtered out / A magnet pulls out each fraction / Hydrocarbons condense at different heights of a column depending on their boiling points / The oil is frozen in layers) β Hydrocarbons condense at different heights of a column depending on their boiling pointsPrompt: The column is hot at the bottom and cooler at the top.
- What is the molecular formula of methane, the alkane with 1 carbon atom? (CβHβ / CHβ / CHβ / CHβ) β CHβPrompt: Use CβHββββ.
Watch out for
- Everyday meanings of words getting in the way of the science meaning: define key words explicitly.
- Remembering facts without the reason: ask "why?" and "what is the evidence?"
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Choose the right technique to separate a mixture.
- Use concrete materials: teacher demo or video.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Move on to: Cracking, alkenes and the bromine water test.
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
