Objective and success criteria
Students will: Main idea and supporting details.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: What is it mostly about?
Leads to: Author's purpose; Text structure (cause–effect, compare, problem–solution); Summarising
Materials: A short text or extract (one copy each), Highlighters, Question cards, Mini whiteboards, A short model text on the board, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 5 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (What is it mostly about?). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Buses take people to work. Trains go fast on tracks. Planes fly in the sky. What is this mostly about? (planes / ways to travel / the sky / going to work) → ways to travelPrompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
- Cats like to sleep. They sleep in the sun. They sleep on beds. Some cats sleep most of the day! What is this mostly about? (dogs playing / the sun / cats sleeping / beds) → cats sleepingPrompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
- We use our eyes to see. We use our ears to hear. We use our nose to smell. What is this mostly about? (flowers / our eyes / music / our senses) → our sensesPrompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
Hook · 5 min
- Read the first lines of a short text aloud and ask what students predict will happen and why.
- Share the objective: Main idea and supporting details. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Sloths move very slowly. They hang upside down in trees for most of the day. They even sleep and eat upside down. Moving slowly helps them save energy. What is the main idea?
- Step 1: The main idea covers the whole text; details only cover a part.
- Step 2: So the answer is: Sloths live slow, upside-down lives in trees.
- Answer: Sloths live slow, upside-down lives in trees.
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Dolphins are very smart. They can learn tricks, solve puzzles and recognise themselves in a mirror. They also talk to each other with clicks and whistles. What is the main idea? (Dolphins whistle. / Dolphins like mirrors. / Dolphins live in the sea. / Dolphins are intelligent animals.) → Dolphins are intelligent animals.Prompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
- Recycling helps our planet. When we recycle paper, fewer trees are cut down. Recycling cans saves energy. It also means less rubbish goes into the ground. What is the main idea? (Rubbish is smelly. / Recycling helps the planet in many ways. / Paper comes from trees. / Cans are made of metal.) → Recycling helps the planet in many ways.Prompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
You do: independent practice · 10 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Recycling helps our planet. When we recycle paper, fewer trees are cut down. Recycling cans saves energy. It also means less rubbish goes into the ground. What is the main idea? (Paper comes from trees. / Rubbish is smelly. / Cans are made of metal. / Recycling helps the planet in many ways.) → Recycling helps the planet in many ways.Prompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
- Long ago, people did not have fridges. They kept food cold in cellars, packed it in ice, or dried and salted meat so it would last. What is the main idea? (Fridges are expensive. / Salt makes food tasty. / Cellars are dark. / People once used other ways to keep food from spoiling.) → People once used other ways to keep food from spoiling.Prompt: What is the WHOLE text mostly about, not just one part?
Watch out for
- Answering from memory or opinion instead of evidence in the text.
- Copying a long quote without explaining what it shows.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: What is it mostly about?.
- Use concrete materials: a short text or extract (one copy each).
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Move on to: Author's purpose; Text structure (cause–effect, compare, problem–solution); Summarising.
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
