  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Write 360/1000 as a decimal. → 0.36Prompt: Thousandths need three decimal places.

Hook · 5 min

  • Show two prices or race times with decimals and ask which is bigger, then why.
  • Share the objective: Convert decimals to fractions in simplest form. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Write 0.7 as a fraction in its simplest form.
  • Step 1: 0.7 = 7/10
  • Step 2: 7/10
  • Answer: 7/10
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Write 0.4 as a fraction in its simplest form. → 2/5Prompt: Tenths: write it over 10.
  2. Write 8.2 as a mixed number in simplest form. → 41/5 (8 1/5)Prompt: The whole number stays the same.

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Write 0.338 as a fraction in its simplest form. → 169/500Prompt: Thousandths: write it over 1000.
  2. Write 1.25 as a mixed number in simplest form. → 5/4 (1 1/4)Prompt: The whole number stays the same.

  • Moving the digits the wrong way when multiplying or dividing by 10.

Support and stretch

Support
