Objective and success criteria
Students will: Take away with pictures (to 5).

Before and after
Needs first: Count pictures up to 5
Leads to: Take away with pictures (to 10)
Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 5 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Count pictures up to 5). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- How many hearts are there? β₯ β₯ β₯ β 3Prompt: Touch each one as you count it.
- Which number tells how many stars? β β β (5 / 3 / 4 / 2) β 3Prompt: Count them carefully, one at a time.

Hook Β· 5 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: Take away with pictures (to 5). Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: There were 4. The β ones were taken away. How many are left? β₯ β₯ β β
- Step 1: 4 β 2 = 2
- Step 2: 2
- Answer: 2
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- There were 2. The β ones were taken away. How many are left? β β β 1Prompt: Do not count the crossed-out ones.
- 3 birds are in the pond. 3 fly away. How many birds are still in the pond? β 0Prompt: Hold up 3 fingers.
You do: independent practice Β· 10 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.

- 5 birds are in the pond. 1 fly away. How many birds are still in the pond? β 4Prompt: Hold up 5 fingers.
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 β 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
