Write a linear function rule from a table

Algebra

CCSS 8.F.B.4England: KS3 AlgebraEngland: GCSE Foundation Algebra

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Write a linear function rule from a table.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Find the rate of change from a table; Find the y-intercept from an equation, table or graph

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Balance scales or a balance drawing, Algebra tiles, Function machine cards, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up Β· 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Find the rate of change from a table; Find the y-intercept from an equation, table or graph). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. x: βˆ’2, 3, 8, 13. y: βˆ’13, 27, 67, 107. What is the rate of change (slope)? β†’ 8Prompt: How much does y change each time x changes?
  2. What is the y-intercept of y = 2x βˆ’ 5? β†’ -5Prompt: The y-intercept is the value of y when x = 0.
  3. x: 0, 2, 4, 6. y: 1, 6, 11, 16. Find the slope. Give a fraction in simplest form. β†’ 5/2 (2 1/2)Prompt: Slope = change in y Γ· change in x.

Hook Β· 5 min

  • Show a "think of a number" puzzle and ask the class to work out the starting number.
  • Share the objective: Write a linear function rule from a table. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it Β· 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: x: 0, 1, 2, 3. y: βˆ’8, βˆ’13, βˆ’18, βˆ’23. Write y in terms of x. Type the right-hand side.
  • Step 1: b = βˆ’8, m = βˆ’5
  • Step 2: y = βˆ’5x βˆ’ 8
  • Answer: -5x-8
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice Β· 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. x: 0, 1, 2, 3. y: βˆ’1, βˆ’5, βˆ’9, βˆ’13. Write y in terms of x. Type the right-hand side. β†’ -4x-1Prompt: The value at x = 0 is the y-intercept.
  2. x: 2, 4, 6, 8. y: 2, βˆ’4, βˆ’10, βˆ’16. Write y in terms of x. Type the right-hand side. β†’ -3x+8Prompt: x goes up in 2s, so halve the change in y to get the slope.

You do: independent practice Β· 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket Β· 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. x: 0, 1, 2, 3. y: βˆ’5, βˆ’4, βˆ’3, βˆ’2. Write y in terms of x. Type the right-hand side. β†’ x-5Prompt: The value at x = 0 is the y-intercept.
  2. x: 2, 4, 6, 8. y: βˆ’9, βˆ’19, βˆ’29, βˆ’39. Write y in terms of x. Type the right-hand side. β†’ -5x+1Prompt: x goes up in 2s, so halve the change in y to get the slope.

Watch out for

  • Doing an operation to one side of an equation but not the other.
  • Reading 3x as 3 + x, or thinking x always stands for one particular number.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Find the rate of change from a table.
  • Use concrete materials: balance scales or a balance drawing.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
