Objective and success criteria

Students will: How many are hiding? Find the missing part (to 10).

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up Β· 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. 8 = 6 + __ β†’ 2Prompt: Start at 6 and count on to 8.
  2. Chloe has 6 pencils. 2 are red and the rest are blue. How many are blue? β†’ 4Prompt: The red ones and blue ones together make 6.
  3. Which pair does NOT make 6? (5 + 1 / 1 + 5 / 5 + 2) β†’ 5 + 2Prompt: Add each pair.

Hook Β· 5 min

  • Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
  • Share the objective: How many are hiding? Find the missing part (to 10). Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it Β· 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: There are 4 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? β—† β—†
  • Step 1: 2 + 2 = 4
  • Step 2: 2
  • Answer: 2
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice Β· 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. There are 5 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? β—† β—† β—† β—† β†’ 1Prompt: Count the ones you can see: that is one part of 5.
  2. Hana had 10 toy cars. 3 are on the mat and the rest are in the box. How many are in the box? β†’ 7Prompt: The two parts together make 10.

You do: independent practice Β· 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket Β· 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. There are 8 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? β—† β—† β—† β—† β—† β—† β—† β†’ 1Prompt: Count the ones you can see: that is one part of 8.
  2. Mei had 6 toy cars. 2 are on the mat and the rest are in the box. How many are in the box? β†’ 4Prompt: The two parts together make 6.

Watch out for

  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 βˆ’ 17 = 45).
  • Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts.
  • Use concrete materials: base-ten blocks.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
