- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Value of a digit in four-digit numbers
Leads to: Expanded form of numbers up to 1 000 000
Materials: Place value chart, Base-ten blocks or a number line, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 5 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Value of a digit in four-digit numbers). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- In 6951, which place is the digit 6 in? (ones / tens / hundreds / thousands) → thousandsPrompt: Name the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.
- What is the value of the digit 5 in 1275? → 5Prompt: Which place is the digit in?
- Which number has the digit 1 in the tens place? (6781 / 3510 / 1458 / 8156) → 3510Prompt: The tens place is 1 place from the right end.
Hook · 5 min
- Show a number in the news or a price tag and ask what each digit is worth.
- Share the objective: Write four-digit numbers in expanded form. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Write 6418 in expanded form. What goes in the gap? 6000 + __ + 10 + 8
- Step 1: 6418 = 6000 + 400 + 10 + 8
- Step 2: 400
- Answer: 400
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Write 8316 in expanded form. What goes in the gap? 8000 + __ + 10 + 6 → 300Prompt: Each part is one digit times its place value.
- Write as a number: 8 + 600 + 2000 → 2608Prompt: Put each part in its place: thousands, hundreds, tens, ones.
You do: independent practice · 10 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Write 9963 in expanded form. What goes in the gap? 9000 + __ + 60 + 3 → 900Prompt: Each part is one digit times its place value.
- What number is 8 thousands, 4 hundreds, 8 ones, 8 tens? → 8488Prompt: Sort the parts from thousands down to ones.
Watch out for
- Reading 1,045 as one thousand four hundred five: point to each place and say its value.
- Thinking a longer number is always bigger, even with decimals (0.45 vs 0.5).
Support and stretch
Support
