- Share the objective: The lesson or moral. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Zack teased Mo for being slow at reading. Later, Zack got stuck on a maths problem, and Mo kindly helped him. What is the lesson?
- Step 1: The lesson is what the character (and reader) learns.
- Step 2: So the answer is: Everyone has different strengths, so don't tease others.

- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- A little ant worked hard all summer, storing food. A grasshopper just sang. When winter came, the ant had food and the grasshopper was hungry. What is the lesson? (Ants are stronger than grasshoppers. / It is wise to prepare for the future. / Singing is bad. / Winter is cold.) → It is wise to prepare for the future.Prompt: What did the main character learn by the end?

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
