- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- What does "preview" mean? (see clearly / not see / see again / see before) → see beforePrompt: Find the prefix at the start of the word.
- Choose the word with the right suffix to finish the sentence. The ___ in the room was so deep you could hear a pin drop. (still) (stillment / stillful / stillness / stilly) → stillnessPrompt: Read the sentence with each choice.

Hook · 5 min
- Show an interesting word in a sentence and ask what it might mean from the clues around it.
- Share the objective: Find the root word (unhelpful → help). Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 10 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: What is the root word in "painter"? Type it.
- Step 1: The root word is the main part of a word, before prefixes and suffixes are added.
- Step 2: So the answer is: paint
- Answer: paint
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 10 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- What is the root word in "teacher"? Type it. → teachPrompt: Cover any prefix at the start and any suffix at the end.
- Read the question. Which word is in the same word family as "build"? (builder / bull / bird / bubble) → builderPrompt: Words in the same family share a root word AND a meaning.
You do: independent practice · 10 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 5 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- What is the root word in "unlocked"? Type it. → lockPrompt: Cover any prefix at the start and any suffix at the end.

Watch out for
- Picking a "bigger" synonym that doesn't fit the meaning.
- Ignoring the clues in the rest of the sentence.

- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
