Expand brackets with a negative multiplier

Algebra

CCSS 7.EE.A.1England: KS3 AlgebraEngland: GCSE Foundation Algebra

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Expand brackets with a negative multiplier.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Expand brackets (distributive property); Multiply integers, including three factors and powers

Leads to: Expand two brackets and simplify; Solve equations with brackets and x on both sides

Materials: Balance scales or a balance drawing, Algebra tiles, Function machine cards, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up Β· 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Expand brackets (distributive property); Multiply integers, including three factors and powers). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Expand: 3(x + 6) β†’ 3x+18Prompt: Multiply every term inside the bracket by the number outside.
  2. 6 Γ— (βˆ’9) = ? β†’ -54Prompt: Multiply the sizes first.
  3. Expand: βˆ’2(3x βˆ’ 7) β†’ -6x+14Prompt: The negative outside multiplies every term inside.

Hook Β· 5 min

  • Show a "think of a number" puzzle and ask the class to work out the starting number.
  • Share the objective: Expand brackets with a negative multiplier. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it Β· 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Expand βˆ’5(x βˆ’ 8).
  • Step 1: βˆ’5 Γ— x = βˆ’5x
  • Step 2: βˆ’5 Γ— (βˆ’8) = 40
  • Step 3: βˆ’5x + 40
  • Answer: -5x+40
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice Β· 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Expand βˆ’6(x + 1). β†’ -6x-6Prompt: Multiply BOTH terms by βˆ’6.
  2. Expand βˆ’(2x βˆ’ 9). β†’ -2x+9Prompt: A minus sign in front of brackets means Γ— (βˆ’1).

You do: independent practice Β· 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket Β· 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Expand βˆ’3(x + 8). β†’ -3x-24Prompt: Multiply BOTH terms by βˆ’3.
  2. Amara expands βˆ’3(4x βˆ’ 8) and gets βˆ’12x βˆ’ 24. What is the correct expansion? β†’ -12x+24Prompt: Check the second term: what is a negative times a negative?

Watch out for

  • Doing an operation to one side of an equation but not the other.
  • Reading 3x as 3 + x, or thinking x always stands for one particular number.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Expand brackets (distributive property).
  • Use concrete materials: balance scales or a balance drawing.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Expand two brackets and simplify; Solve equations with brackets and x on both sides.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
