Objective and success criteria

Students will: Find missing sides in similar shapes.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Dilations (enlargements) from the origin

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Rulers and protractors, Squared or dotted paper, Shape cut-outs, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Dilations (enlargements) from the origin). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Dilate (−4, −1) by a scale factor of 2 with centre the origin. Type the image like (2, −3). → (−8, −2)Prompt: Multiply both coordinates by the scale factor.
  2. A(−8, −12) is dilated about the origin to A′(−20, −30). What is the scale factor? Give a fraction or decimal. → 5/2 (2 1/2)Prompt: Divide an image coordinate by the matching original coordinate.
  3. A 6 by 2 rectangle is dilated by scale factor 3. What is the area of the image? → 108Prompt: Every length is multiplied by the scale factor.

Hook · 5 min

  • Show a photo of a building, a tile pattern or a road sign and ask what shapes and angles students can spot.
  • Share the objective: Find missing sides in similar shapes. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Two triangles are similar. The small one has sides 7 cm and 8 cm. The matching side to 7 cm on the large triangle is 14 cm. How long is the side matching 8 cm?
  • Step 1: k = 2
  • Step 2: 8 × 2 = 16 cm
  • Answer: 16
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Two triangles are similar. The small one has sides 8 cm and 7 cm. The matching side to 8 cm on the large triangle is 20 cm. How long is the side matching 7 cm? → 17.5Prompt: Find the scale factor from the matching pair.
  2. Elena is 3 m tall and casts a 1 m shadow. At the same moment a tree casts a 12 m shadow. How tall is the tree, in m? Round to 1 decimal place if needed. → 36Prompt: The sun's rays make similar triangles.

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Zoe is 2.5 m tall and casts a 1 m shadow. At the same moment a tree casts a 11 m shadow. How tall is the tree, in m? Round to 1 decimal place if needed. → 27.5Prompt: The sun's rays make similar triangles.
  2. Two triangles are similar. The small one has sides 7 cm and 4 cm. The matching side to 7 cm on the large triangle is 17.5 cm. How long is the side matching 4 cm? → 10Prompt: Find the scale factor from the matching pair.

Watch out for

  • Thinking a square turned on its corner is no longer a square.
  • Reading the wrong scale on a protractor.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Dilations (enlargements) from the origin.
  • Use concrete materials: rulers and protractors.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
