Volumes of gases from moles (24 dm³ at RTP)

Chemical reactions, acids and bases

CCSS NGSS.HS-PS1-7England: GCSE Chemistry: Quantitative chemistry (volumes of gases, Higher)

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Volumes of gases from moles (24 dm³ at RTP).

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Moles and reacting masses

Leads to: the next skill in this area.

Materials: Teacher demo or video, Indicator color chart, Mini whiteboards, A diagram or short video clip of the idea, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 5 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Moles and reacting masses). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. How many moles are in 8 g of sodium hydroxide (NaOH, Mr = 40)? → 0.2 molPrompt: moles = mass ÷ Mr
  2. What is the mass of 0.5 mol of oxygen (O₂, Mr = 32), in g? → 16 gPrompt: mass = moles × Mr
  3. CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂. What mass of carbon dioxide is released when 25 g of calcium carbonate decomposes? (Mr: CaCO₃ = 100, CO₂ = 44) → 11 gPrompt: Find the moles of calcium carbonate.

Hook · 5 min

  • Drop an antacid tablet in water (or show a clip) and ask whether a new substance is being made.
  • Share the objective: Volumes of gases from moles (24 dm³ at RTP). Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 10 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: What volume does 1.5 mol of hydrogen gas occupy at room temperature and pressure, in dm³? (1 mol of any gas occupies 24 dm³ at RTP)
  • Step 1: 1.5 × 24 = 36
  • Step 2: So the answer is: 36 dm³
  • Answer: 36 dm³
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 10 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. What volume does 0.25 mol of hydrogen gas occupy at room temperature and pressure, in dm³? (1 mol of any gas occupies 24 dm³ at RTP) → 6 dm³Prompt: volume = moles × 24
  2. A reaction produced 600 cm³ of carbon dioxide at RTP. How many moles of gas is this? (1 mol occupies 24 dm³ = 24 000 cm³) → 0.025 molPrompt: moles = volume ÷ molar volume

You do: independent practice · 10 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 8 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 5 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. What volume does 32 g of oxygen (O₂, Mr = 32) occupy at RTP, in dm³? (1 mol of gas = 24 dm³) → 24 dm³Prompt: First find the moles: mass ÷ Mr.
  2. What volume does 0.1 mol of ammonia gas occupy at room temperature and pressure, in dm³? (1 mol of any gas occupies 24 dm³ at RTP) → 2.4 dm³Prompt: volume = moles × 24

Watch out for

  • Everyday meanings of words getting in the way of the science meaning: define key words explicitly.
  • Remembering facts without the reason: ask "why?" and "what is the evidence?"

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Moles and reacting masses.
  • Use concrete materials: teacher demo or video.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
