Exercise and your body: heartbeat and breathing

Human body and health

CCSS NGSS.SEP 4England: KS1 Y2 Animals, including humansEngland: KS2 Y6 Animals, including humans

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Exercise and your body: heartbeat and breathing.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Healthy habits: washing, sleep, exercise and water

Leads to: How diet, exercise and harmful substances affect the body

Materials: Stopwatches, Body diagrams, Mini whiteboards, A diagram or short video clip of the idea, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 4 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Healthy habits: washing, sleep, exercise and water). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Is this a healthy or an unhealthy habit: brushing teeth twice a day? (healthy habit / unhealthy habit) → healthy habitPrompt: Would this help your body grow, stay clean and feel rested?
  2. Why is it healthy to play actively every day? (It makes your heart, lungs and muscles stronger. / It makes you shorter. / It stops you needing food. / It makes your bones soft.) → It makes your heart, lungs and muscles stronger.Prompt: What happens to your heart when you run?
  3. Is this a healthy or an unhealthy habit: washing hands before eating? (healthy habit / unhealthy habit) → healthy habitPrompt: Would this help your body grow, stay clean and feel rested?

Hook · 3 min

  • Ask everyone to find their pulse, then jump for 30 seconds and find it again.
  • Share the objective: Exercise and your body: heartbeat and breathing. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Why do you sweat when you exercise?
  • Step 1: Sweat evaporating from your skin carries heat away.
  • Step 2: So the answer is: Sweat cools your skin as it dries.
  • Answer: Sweat cools your skin as it dries.
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Why does your heart beat faster when you run? (Your muscles need more oxygen and food from your blood. / To make you cooler. / Your heart is scared. / Your heart is getting smaller.) → Your muscles need more oxygen and food from your blood.Prompt: Working muscles need more of what blood carries.
  2. True or false? You do not need to drink water when you exercise. (True / False) → FalsePrompt: Think about heartbeat, breathing, sweat and water.

You do: independent practice · 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. Why do you sweat when you exercise? (Sweat cools your skin as it dries. / Because you drank too much water. / To wash your clothes. / To make your muscles bigger.) → Sweat cools your skin as it dries.Prompt: How do you feel when a breeze dries wet skin?
  2. True or false? Exercise is only good for your legs. (True / False) → FalsePrompt: Think about heartbeat, breathing, sweat and water.

Watch out for

  • Everyday meanings of words getting in the way of the science meaning: define key words explicitly.
  • Remembering facts without the reason: ask "why?" and "what is the evidence?"

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Healthy habits: washing, sleep, exercise and water.
  • Use concrete materials: stopwatches.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: How diet, exercise and harmful substances affect the body.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
