  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.

  2. Count by tens. What is missing? 50, 60, __, 80, 90 → 70Prompt: Each number is 10 more than the one before.

Hook · 3 min

  • Share the objective: Missing numbers on a hundred square. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: This is a row of the hundred square. Which number is missing? 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, __, 37, 38, 39, 40
  • Step 1: 35 + 1 = 36
  • Step 2: 36
  • Answer: 36
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. This is a row of the hundred square. Which number is missing? 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, __, 89, 90 → 88Prompt: Along a row, the numbers go up by one.
  2. What number comes just before 30? → 29Prompt: Just before a ten number, the ones digit is 9.

You do: independent practice · 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. What number comes just after 40? → 41Prompt: After a ten number, the ones start again at 1.
  2. Fill in the missing number: 38, __, 40, 41 → 39Prompt: Count on by ones.

Watch out for

  • Reading 1,045 as one thousand four hundred five: point to each place and say its value.
  • Thinking a longer number is always bigger, even with decimals (0.45 vs 0.5).

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Count to 100 by ones and tens.
  • Use concrete materials: place value chart.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Move around a number grid to 120.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
