Warm-up · 4 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Positions in a line: first to tenth). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Animals line up. From the front: cat, rabbit, dog, lion, tiger, monkey, bear. Which animal is second? (bear / rabbit / monkey / lion) → rabbitPrompt: The first animal is at the front of the line.
- From the front of the line: horse, duck, cat, tiger, monkey, rabbit, frog, bear, dog, lion. Where is the frog? (ninth / seventh / sixth / eighth) → seventhPrompt: Find the frog in the list.
- Kwame is fifth in the lunch queue. How many children are in front of Kwame? → 4Prompt: Being fifth means there are some children before Kwame.
Hook · 3 min
- Ask the class to estimate the length of the room or the weight of a bag before measuring it.
- Share the objective: Days of the week. Read the success criteria together.

- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Which day comes after Saturday?
- Step 1: Sunday
- Answer: Sunday
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Which day comes before Sunday? (Tuesday / Saturday / Friday / Monday) → SaturdayPrompt: Say the days in order: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…
- Today is Saturday. What day will it be in 3 days? (Tuesday / Monday / Sunday / Wednesday) → TuesdayPrompt: Count on 3 days, one at a time.
You do: independent practice · 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Today is Friday. What day will it be in 4 days? (Saturday / Monday / Wednesday / Tuesday) → TuesdayPrompt: Count on 4 days, one at a time.
- How many days are there in 4 weeks? → 28Prompt: Count the days from Monday to Sunday.
Watch out for
- Measuring from the end of the ruler instead of zero.
- Converting units the wrong way (multiplying instead of dividing).

- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
