Pictograms where each picture stands for 2
Statistics and probability
CCSS 2.MD.D.10England: Y2 Statistics
Objective and success criteria
Students will: Pictograms where each picture stands for 2.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Read a pictogram where each picture is 1; Count in twos
Leads to: the next skill in this area.
Materials: Squared paper for charts, Class survey data, Sticky notes for a live chart, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 4 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Read a pictogram where each picture is 1; Count in twos). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Favourite sport (βΊ = 1 child) football: βΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊ swimming: βΊβΊβΊ cycling: βΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊ How many children chose swimming? β 3Prompt: Find the row for swimming.
- Count in twos. What is missing? 24, 26, __, 30, 32 β 28Prompt: Each number is 2 more than the one before.
- How we get to school (βΊ = 1 child) walk: βΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊ bus: βΊβΊβΊβΊβΊβΊ car: βΊβΊ Which was chosen the least? (walk / bus / car) β carPrompt: Look for the shortest row.
Hook Β· 3 min
- Take a quick class survey (favorite fruit, travel to school) and ask what the results tell us.
- Share the objective: Pictograms where each picture stands for 2. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Favourite fruit (β = 2 children) apple: β β banana: β β β β β β β β grapes: β β β β β How many children chose apple?
- Step 1: 2 Γ 2 = 4
- Answer: 4
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Today's weather in different towns (β = 2 children) sunny: β β β rainy: β β cloudy: β β β β How many children chose rainy? β 4Prompt: Each star is worth 2, not 1.
- Favourite fruit (β = 2 children) apple: β β β banana: β β β β grapes: β How many more children chose banana than apple? β 2Prompt: Work out each row in children first (each β is 2).
You do: independent practice Β· 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Favourite fruit (β = 2 children) apple: β β β β β β banana: β β β grapes: β β How many more children chose banana than grapes? β 2Prompt: Work out each row in children first (each β is 2).
- Today's weather in different towns (β = 2 children) sunny: β β β β β rainy: β β β cloudy: β How many children chose rainy? β 6Prompt: Each star is worth 2, not 1.
Watch out for
- Forgetting to put data in order before finding the median.
- Reading a bar's height wrongly when the scale goes up in 2s or 5s.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Read a pictogram where each picture is 1.
- Use concrete materials: squared paper for charts.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
