Before and after
Needs first: Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts
Leads to: the next skill in this area.
Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up · 4 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Split 6, 7, 8 and 9 into two parts). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- 9 = 2 + __ → 7Prompt: Start at 2 and count on to 9.
- Aisha has 6 blocks. 3 are red and the rest are blue. How many are blue? → 3Prompt: The red ones and blue ones together make 6.
- Which pair does NOT make 7? (1 + 6 / 2 + 5 / 5 + 2 / 5 + 3) → 5 + 3Prompt: Add each pair.
Hook · 3 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: How many are hiding? Find the missing part (to 10). Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it · 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: There are 4 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? ◆ ◆
- Step 1: 2 + 2 = 4
- Step 2: 2
- Answer: 2
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice · 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- There are 4 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? ◆ → 3Prompt: Count the ones you can see: that is one part of 4.
- Zoe had 7 toy cars. 3 are on the mat and the rest are in the box. How many are in the box? → 4Prompt: The two parts together make 7.
You do: independent practice · 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket · 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- There are 8 counters. Some are hidden under a cup. You can see these. How many are hiding? ● ● → 6Prompt: Count the ones you can see: that is one part of 8.
- Amara had 10 toy cars. 3 are on the mat and the rest are in the box. How many are in the box? → 7Prompt: The two parts together make 10.
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 − 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
Support and stretch
Support
