Measure in cm, m, inches and feet

Measurement

CCSS 2.MD.A.1CCSS 2.MD.A.3CCSS 2.MD.B.5England: Y2 Measurement

Objective and success criteria

Students will: Measure in cm, m, inches and feet.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Measure length with units

Leads to: Mass and capacity; Choose centimetres or metres; Choose inches, feet or yards

Materials: Rulers, scales and measuring jugs, Clock faces, Conversion chart, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 4 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Measure length with units). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. Isla's paper chain is 8 clips long. Aisha's is 3 clips long. How many clips longer is Isla's chain? → 5Prompt: Find the difference between the two lengths.
  2. Mateo's paper chain is 4 clips long. Isla's is 2 clips long. How many clips longer is Mateo's chain? → 2Prompt: Find the difference between the two lengths.
  3. Daniel's paper chain is 10 clips long. Amara's is 8 clips long. How many clips longer is Daniel's chain? → 2Prompt: Find the difference between the two lengths.

Hook · 3 min

  • Ask the class to estimate the length of the room or the weight of a bag before measuring it.
  • Share the objective: Measure in cm, m, inches and feet. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: What is the best estimate for the length of a door?
  • Step 1: A door is about 2 m.
  • Answer: 2 m
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. What is the best estimate for the length of a book? (25 m / 25 cm / 250 cm / 2500 cm) → 25 cmPrompt: A centimetre is about the width of a finger nail.
  2. What is the best estimate for the length of a bus? (120 m / 1200 m / 12 cm / 12 m) → 12 mPrompt: A centimetre is about the width of a finger nail.

You do: independent practice · 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. What is the best estimate for the length of a book? (2500 cm / 25 cm / 250 cm / 25 m) → 25 cmPrompt: A centimetre is about the width of a finger nail.
  2. What is the best estimate for the length of a football pitch? (1000 m / 100 cm / 10000 m / 100 m) → 100 mPrompt: A centimetre is about the width of a finger nail.

Watch out for

  • Measuring from the end of the ruler instead of zero.
  • Converting units the wrong way (multiplying instead of dividing).

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Measure length with units.
  • Use concrete materials: rulers, scales and measuring jugs.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Mass and capacity; Choose centimetres or metres; Choose inches, feet or yards.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
