Objective and success criteria

Students will: Dilations (enlargements) from the origin.

  • I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
  • I can explain each step and say why it works.
  • I can check my answer and spot a mistake.

Before and after

Needs first: Scale factors and enlargement; Coordinates in all four quadrants

Leads to: Find missing sides in similar shapes

Materials: Rulers and protractors, Squared or dotted paper, Shape cut-outs, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).

Warm-up · 4 min

  • Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Scale factors and enlargement; Coordinates in all four quadrants). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
  • Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
  1. A 14 cm by 8 cm rectangle is enlarged by scale factor 3. What is the new width in cm? → 24Prompt: Every length is multiplied by the scale factor.
  2. A side of 7 cm becomes 28 cm after an enlargement. What is the scale factor? → 4Prompt: Scale factor = new length ÷ old length.
  3. A 12 cm by 12 cm rectangle is enlarged by scale factor 3. What is the new width in cm? → 36Prompt: Every length is multiplied by the scale factor.

Hook · 3 min

  • Show a photo of a building, a tile pattern or a road sign and ask what shapes and angles students can spot.
  • Share the objective: Dilations (enlargements) from the origin. Read the success criteria together.

I do: model it · 7 min

  • Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
  • Example: Dilate (−3, −5) by a scale factor of 4 with centre the origin. Type the image like (2, −3).
  • Step 1: (−12, −20)
  • Answer: (−12, −20)
  • Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.

We do: guided practice · 6 min

  • Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
  • Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
  1. Dilate (2, 4) by a scale factor of 4 with centre the origin. Type the image like (2, −3). → (8, 16)Prompt: Multiply both coordinates by the scale factor.
  2. A(8, 8) is dilated about the origin to A′(6, 6). What is the scale factor? Give a fraction or decimal. → 3/4Prompt: Divide an image coordinate by the matching original coordinate.

You do: independent practice · 7 min

  • Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
  • Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.

The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.

Exit ticket · 3 min

  • Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
  1. A 4 by 4 rectangle is dilated by scale factor 4. What is the area of the image? → 256Prompt: Every length is multiplied by the scale factor.
  2. A(16, 16) is dilated about the origin to A′(4, 4). What is the scale factor? Give a fraction or decimal. → 1/4Prompt: Divide an image coordinate by the matching original coordinate.

Watch out for

  • Thinking a square turned on its corner is no longer a square.
  • Reading the wrong scale on a protractor.

Support and stretch

Support

  • Review first: Scale factors and enlargement.
  • Use concrete materials: rulers and protractors.
  • Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
  • Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.

Stretch

  • Move on to: Find missing sides in similar shapes.
  • Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
  • Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
